Bowley is a small hill to the west of Dean Lane and north of Blackburn Old Road. The area beyond the hill is often referred to as Back of Bowley, and just behind the hill are Back of Bowley farm and Back of Bowley cottages. However, in documents the term sometimes refers to the entire lands behind the hill and up to the border of the town. In this area are Cowden, Dean Farm (now Bowley Scout Camp), Whitecarr, Heys and the various farms and cottages of Whalley Banks – which are, depsite the name, part of Great Harwood.
