1 November 1625 Thomas Mercer of Upper Town was buried at St. Bartholomew’s, Great Harwood.

Thomas Mercer, possibly of Tan House, was the ancestor of the Mercer family of Tan House. His sister Elizabeth married Robert Squire of what later became Squires Farm Great Harwood, son of Henry Squire and Dorothy Hesketh and the grandson of Thomas Hesketh (Lord of the Manor) and Alice Holcroft. The family were engaged in all the processes of woollen cloth production, possibly including fulling.
