Survey of Nowell Lands 1765

Survey and Rental of Lands on Harwood Moor and in Great Harwood, belonging to Alexander Nowell, esq. 1765

Original document held at Lancashire Archives.
DDF 965

Alexander Nowell held one third of the manor of Great Harwood. This was mostly in what is now the town centre, known as the lower town, but not entirely, particularly after enclosure of the common lands to the north of the town when Nowell was allocated a third share.

The table below lists separately the farms associated with the lower town and of ‘Harwood’ and the enclosure allotments on ‘Harwood Moor’. The relative worth of the tenements can be assessed from the size of the holdings, the number of bays (an indicator of the size of an individual buidling or collection of building – a bay being the space between supports in a building) and the rental value.

Surveys such as this are a goldmine of information for local and family historians. For the latter the inclusion of the ‘lives’ on a lease(the lease would expire when the last life died unless it was renewed) with names and ages is very useful in a period when there are few other reliable sources.
