INTRODUCTION.
Great Harwood is a manufacturing town of considerable importance, 5 miles N. E. from Blackburn. It is in the Darwen parliamentary division, and in the Hyndburn county council division. Since the opening of the loop line from Blackburn to Rose Grove, in 1877, building advanced very rapidly, new Streets springing up in various directions. The population of the township in 1718 is estimated to have been 700, while at the beginning of the nineteenth century it had risen to 1,659. In 1811 it had increased to 1,676, and in 1821 it had increased to 2104. In 1831 it was 2,436; 1841, 2,273; 1851, 2,548; 1861, 4,070; 1871, 4,907; 1881, 6,281; 1891, 9,073; 1901, 12,014; 1905, 13,500; 1911, 13,815; 1921, 13,596 and 1931, 12,787; the present estimated population is 12,600.
The reduced rateable value on April 1st, 1934, was £61,252. The area of the township is 2,863 acres, and Mrs. Trappes-Lomax is the principal landowner. The Local Board, formed in 1863, was superseded by the Urban District Council, established under the Local Government Act, 1894. It consists of twelve members. Since the foundation of the Board, in 1863, great improvements were effected. The old offices in Curate Street were being superseded by a large, handsome, and commodious structure, erected on the Bentley Fold old site, at a cost of about £5,000. The building consists of council chamber, committee rooms, separate offices for the clerk, collector, surveyor, sanitary inspector and other officials, and provision has also been made for holding the technical classes here. The County Bank, Limited, Martin’s Bank, the Union Bank of Manchester have branches in the town. The Streets are well paved and have a clean appearance. A handsome clock tower, 52 feet high, was erected in 1903, on land given for the purpose by the Urban District Council, to the memory of the late John Mercer, F.R.S., F,C.S., inventor of Mercerisation, as applied to cotton and other fabrics.
The POLICE STATION, situate in Blackburn Road, was built in 1905 at a cost of about £6,000.
The town is supplied with gas and water by the Accrington District Gas and Water Board, The Gas Works were completed at the beginning of the year 1884. There are two gasometers, with capacities for 555,000 and 900,000 cubic feet respectively, and the town is lighted by over 320 gas lamps.
New filtrarion beds and a new high pressure reservoir formed at The Cliff, were opened on the 1st May, 1899, and cost about £30,000.
In 1887 a CEMETERY, covering five acres, was opened in Blackburn Road at a cost of £5,500, including mortuary chapel; the number of interments is over 8,000.
The CHURCH, dedicated to St. Bartholomew, is an ancient fabric with square tower. It is known to have existed in 1389, and most probably is of still more ancient date. It was rebuilt in the reign of Henry VII, and the roof was renewed about the middle of the 16th century. In 1865 considerable repairs were effected in the interior of the building. It contains 460 sittings, all of which are free. The benefice is a vicarage of the annual value of £410 in the patronage of the Vicar of Blackburn and held by the Rev. Roger B. Lloyd, MA. The east window is of stained glass, and is a memorial of the late Mrs Clegg, of Sparth House, Clayton-le-Moors, and in the south wall of the chancel are two stained windows in memory of the late Rev. William M. Hazlewood, who was vicar of the parish 27 years. He died in 1888. The west window was filled with stained glass in 1893, to the memory of the late Mr. Richard Haworth. An organ, built at a cost of £450, was the gift of Robert Clayton, Esq., of Rishton. The church contains a chapel, also the gift of Robert Clayton, Esq., J.P., of Rishton, the east window of the chapel being in memory of his parents. The architects were Messrs. Austin & Paley, Lancaster, and the style is decorated Gothic.
A new Church, erected in St. Hubert’s Road, accommodating about 610 persons, cost £8,000, and was dedicated to St. John. Service was formerly held in St. John’s Jubilee School which was erected in 1887. The church contains a beautiful stained-glass window consisting of six lights and tracery, designed and executed by Messrs. Shrigley and Hunt of Lancaster. Total cost, including plate glass protection, £1,080. The reredos, designed by Messrs. Austin & Paley, of Lancaster, is 14 feet wide and 14 feet high, in the centre. It is flanked by two square projecting towers comprising three carved niches, containing figures of six northern Saints. The main portion is in three divisions, the sides being lower than the centre. The centre contains a large sculptured panel of the Crucifixion with figures of the Virgin and St. John, above which is a segmental arch with canopy and crocketed spire. The side portions contain niches with carved canopies, cornices and cresting, the inches containing figures of four apostles. On each side of the reredos the wall is panelled in oak with linen fold patterns in the top panels, corresponding with the linen fold patterns on the altar. The cornice at the top of the panels is inscribed, Te laudamus, tibi benedicimus, tibi adoramus, te glorificamus. In the central panel is cut the inscription, To the Glory of God, In loving memory of Edward Brogden Loynd, a great benefactor of the Church, and Septima Loynd his wife. The reredos, panelling and stained-glass east window were erected A.D. 1926, by Messrs. R. Bridgeman & Sons, of Lichfield, and cost £700. Erected in the church is also a chancel screen, the gift Mrs. Clayton, of Rishton, in memory of her husband, Robert Clayton, Esq., .J.P.; Rev. James Alex. Wilson, M.A., T.C.D., vicar.
In Commercial Road, a school for boys was opened in May, 1895. It has accommodation for 250 children and the cost of its erection was £2,000.
The CATHOLIC CHURCH of Our Lady and St. Hubert was opened and dedicated in November, 1859, under the rectorship of the Rev. W. Dunderdale. It is an elegant Gothic structure designed by E. W. Pugin, and built by James Lomax, K.S.G., at a cost, including schools .and Presbytery, of £11,000. Later, a parochial hall and a boys’ school were built and the infants’ school enlarged. The church consists of nave, transepts, chancel and Lady Chapel, with a spire rising to a height of 125 feet. The High Altar of Caen stone is beautifully carved; on the wall of the Lomax Chapel is a fine specimen of modern brass with effigies of the Squire and Mrs. James Lomax, the donors of the church. A fine octagonal pulpit, carved in by the Benedict Art Company, has been erected to the memory of the late Rev. Henry Hill, rector. Recently a war memorial was built of oak and nickel, hearing the names of 52 parishioners who lost their lives in the Great War. A splendid organ by Jardine, of Manchester, stands in the choir gallery. All the windows are of stained-g1ass. The church is under the pastoral charge of the Very Rev. Canon Osmond Woods. The handsome Gothic Cross in the graveyard which surrounds the church was erected to the memory of Canon Dunderdale, rector, 1857 – 1887.
A separate Mission, dedicated to St. Wulstan, Bishop of Worcester, 1062—1095, is situated in Rushton Street. On May 18th, 1912, the foundation stone of the school (to accommodate 300 children) was laid by the Bishop of Salford on a plot of ground adjoining Rushton Street. A presbytery erected in 1929 cost £2,000; Rev. J Rees, priest-in-charge.
The CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, erected in 1888, supersedes the one erected in 1837. It is in the Gothic style of architecture from designs by the late W. H. Varley, Esq., of Blackburn. In the church are several beautiful stained-glass memorial windows. The first representing The Good Shepherd commemorates the late Rev. E. A. Hytch, pastor of the church from 1877 to 1912; and Mr. R. Chippendale, an honoured church officer contemporary. Another window depicting the first Christmas when Shepherds heard the angels singing “Peace on Earth, Goodwill to Men,” is in memory of the men of the church and school who fell in the war. There is also one window with David the Singer and a companion window picturing Hannah at prayer, in memory of Mr. and Mrs. John Birtwistle, of the church’s early days. The present minister is the Rev. G. Walker, M.A. The school premises are situated in Barnmeadow Lane. They were erected in 1878 and used as a day school until the erection of the Western council school. The premises are now used exclusively for religious purposes. In 1914, largely through the interest and generosity of three individuals, the church embarked on an ambitious enterprise in opening the Congregational Park, which covers eight to nine acres. The park contains gents and ladies’ bowling greens, three grass and two shale tennis courts with a children’s park, hockey field, rose garden and rockeries. A pavilion erected on the site contains a billiard room with two t a reading room, a ladies’ recreation room, a committee room, and a kitchen for the preparation of refreshments, etc.
Great Harwood Industrial Co-operative Provision Society, Ltd., was originally founded in 1859, when the population of the town short of 4,000, the first shop being opened in a private house situated in Queen Street. The business was later removed lower down the Street to shop premises. Progress of the co-operative movement may he seen by the imposing premises known as the central buildings, which are situated in Glebe Street. They comprise offices, millinery, dress making, outfitting, boot, shoe, clog, bespoke and ready-made tailoring departments, completely furnished, and are fitted up to date equal to any in the district, including the larger towns. A library in connection with the education department, containing about 2,500 volumes, was presented to the county library. In 1881 the membership of the Society was 610; the present membership being about 3,000.
The Public Hall (Mercer Memorial) is situated in Queen Street and cost £16,000, the money was given by the exors out of the estate of the late Maria Mercer, Oakenshaw, Clayton-Le-Moors.
The County Library, opened January, 1931, by j. W. Baron, Esq., contains 750 volumes.
