In the name of God Amen the xxx th day of August (letters crossed out) in the yeare of our Lord God 1609 and in the seaventh yeare of the Raigne of our Soveraigne Lord James by the grace of God Kinge of England France and Ireland defender of the faith etc and of Scotland the xliij th I William Hindle of Moche Harwood in the county of Lancaster yeoman beinge sicke in body but whole in mynd of good and perfect remembrance praised be God knowing that death to all persons is most uncertaine and the houre and tyme thereof most uncertaine and perceiveing that many troubles and inconveniences doe growe and arise amongst most deare freinds by reason of men dyeing Intestate and not haveinge maid a will to avoid all such troubles and inconveniences doe make this my last will and testament in manner and forme following first and principally I give and bequeathe my soule to Almighty God my maker and redeemer trustinge through the meritts of Jesus Christ to be one of those which shall be saved and my body to be buried in the chappell of Much Harwood where my executors shall thinke convenient and I give for my buriall as the custom doth require Item my will is that I be brought forth honestely and orderly accordinge to my degree Item I give to Thomas Hindle my brother all the stuffe within my house vizt all beddinge and bedstockes brasse puther arkes chistes bordes thelles cowp vessell hirowne vessel plowes harrowes waynes cart wheeles timber sawne and to sawe and all other thinges whatsoever which are ether within my house or without my house appertaininge ether to husbandrie or to huswiferye together with my three kyne Item I give to the said Thomas Hindle (my Brother crossed out) and Michaell Hindle my Bretheren all my shop clothes and apparell equally to be devided betwixt them Item I give to everye one of the children of Thomas Hindle my brother x s Item I give to everye one of the children of Michaell Hindle my brother x s Item I give to Edmond Fishe x s to Peter Fishe x s and to Thomas Fishe x s item to Grace Hindle my brother Nicholas Hindle daughter if she be liveing x s Item I give to William Hindle sonne of John Hindle x s Item I give to Elizabeth Harryes v s to Thomas Harris five pounds and William Harris there father five pounds Item I give to John Hindle my brother Nicholas sonne x s I give to everye one of the children of Henry Ryley x s item I give to every one of the children of Christofer Ryley x s and the rest of all my goods and chattells of what kind soever they be my funerall expences beinge discharged I give Thomas Hindle my Brother Michaell Hindle my Brother and Christofer Ryley to whome I am unkle equally to be devided amongst them and neverthelesse my will is that Thomas Hindle Christofer Ryley and Michaell Hindle shall yearely pay unto Elizabeth Hindle my sister everye one of them xxvj s viij d to keepe herself dureinge her naturall life finally I constitute ordaine and make Thomas Hindle my brother and the aforesaid Christofer Ryley executors of this my last will and testament to see it performed acomplished fulfilled and kept according to the true intent and meaneing of the same as my especiall truste lies in them These beinge witnesses John Crosse Thomas Merser William Merser

7 February 1616 John Morris clerk of Blackburn and William Harris clerk of Much Harwood admitted the will to probate along with the codicil which is contained therein. (A brief translation)

Memorandum that the 13th day of December 1616 William Hindle of Much Harwood in the county of Lancaster yeoman beinge not sicke and in good memorie and about ten dayes before his death did make his will nuncupative concerninge the conveyinge of his lands and said that Thomas Hindle his eldest Brother then liveing should have his lands in Overdarwen dureing his naturall life and after the death of the said Thomas that then Christofer Hindle sonne of the said Thomas Hindle should have them to him and his heirs male for ever and that the said Christofer within three yeares after that he the said Christofer should be possessed of the said (Missing word?) should pay to John Hindle his younger Brother the foure pound of current english money and for want of heirs male of the said Christofer the said lands to go to the said John Hindle and his heirs male and for want of heirs male for the said John then the lands to go to Michaell Hindle one other Brother of the said William Hindle and his heirs male for ever and for want of heirs male of the said Michaell then to the right heirs of him the said William Hindle for ever Item he further said that it was his will and mynd that John Duckworth sonne of Christofer Duckworth late of Harwood aforesaid deceased and sonne of Ann wife of him the said William Hindle should have the half of his lands upon Hinfield within Church to him and his heirs for ever and that Marye Hindle daughter of the said Thomas Hindle (betwixt which John Duckworth and Marye Hindle a marriage was thought to be maid) should have the other halfe of his lands upon Hinfield aforesaid to her and her heirs for ever and that they the said John Duckworth and Marye Hindle ether of them give to Allice Hindle sister to the said Mary xxx li I William Harris clerk being witness Memorandum that Ann Hindle wife of the said William Hindle deceased hath sundrye times hard her said deceased husband convey give and bequeath by word of mouth all the foresaid lands in manner and form aforesaid and never hard at any time him otherwise determined Ann Hindle [written in a different way] and the same doth Christofer Ryley affirme upon his oath Christofer Ryley 7 February 1616 at Blackburn William Harris clerk of Much Harwood Thomas Hindle and Christofer Ryley executors took the oath.
