The railway came to Great Harwood in 1877, and lasted less than a century. Regular passenger services were withdrawn on 2 December 1957, and the line closed completely in 1964.

Like so many of my age my knowledge of the railway is limited to memories of watching the steam engines from one of the many bridges that crossed the line to the fields on the other side. Andy Hunt, has compiled a detailed page on the line, including a list of stationmasters, on the Disused Stations site.
